The Trouble With Diet!
… If you have been following the whole Paleo furore that has developed last weekend on Channel 7’s Sunday Night show – this week social media has gone into overdrive with arguments and accusations and people vehemently for Paleo and those vehemently against it.
Here is the deal. — I have been involved in the Health and Fitness industry since 1979! (Yep… last century!!) And in those 35 years – I have seen this over and over again.
In the 70’s it was the Pritikin diet – no fat at all… in the 1980’s was the Aitkins diet… protein only no carbs… then it swung back to the LOW FAT era, when we stopped eating fat and started to ingest way too much sugar…In the early 2000’s it was the ‘Your Blood Type’ diet…And now in 2015 when we should all be smarter and more aware… Paleo is igniting the whole debate again.
So after 35 years of hearing all this argument … this I know to be true… WHEN YOU EAT INTUITIVELY – that is making your choices from a physiological perspective NOT an EMOTIONAL perspective – EVERYTHING changes. And I mean everything
There can never be, and never will be a ‘one size fits all’ model. We are all different, but when you learn to LISTEN to your own body…
WHEN you understand why you ‘crave’ certain foods from an emotional perspective and are able to release it.
When we learn to choose foods that enhance you, that nourish you, when you move into that place of totally loving and honouring your body, that continues to support YOU – no matter how badly you have treated it in the past…YOUR BODY WILL ALWAYS TELL YOU WHAT IT NEEDS and will always tell you WHAT IT DOESN’T.. weight gain, bloating, tiredness, illness, anxiety, headaches, nausea, cravings, no energy, behind each of those symptoms can be the clue to the impact certain foods have on your body. But you only get there when you learn to unhook from all the ‘experts’ and start to LISTEN… Your job then is to simply HONOUR THE MESSAGE.
But most times we do not make a decision from a purely physiological perspective – we make it from an EMOTIONAL perspective. We eat because we are tired, overwhelmed, angry, stress, frustrated, annoyed, sad, lonely.. or what ever emotion we are unable to express.. We reach for foods that we think are going to make us ‘FEEL’ better because we are stuffing down words we can’t say or feeling we need love and we can’t find it.
Most people eat UNCONSCIOUSLY, because the stress, the pain, the sadness, the anger is too deep to release. We use food as a temporary stop gap measure because the pain of what we feel is so deep. And food is easy to obtain – nobody questions it. If you drink a bottle of wine in the middle of the day – people start to ask questions – but if you eat a packet of Tim Tams, nobody says a word.
Here is what I know to be true – with 35 years of fitness experience and 59 years of life experience behind me….. WHEN YOU DISCOVER THE ART OF EATING INTUITIVELY… when you discover how to RELEASE THE CRAVINGS that are a result of emotions stemming from patterns formed from many unconscious beliefs we have about ourselves. When you LEARN TO LOVE YOURSELF AGAIN…EVERYTHING changes… EVERYTHING.
